Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
