The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
