Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Will Lead Classes at Dungeon Master University

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters run D&D games in old manors in the UK and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are widely appreciated among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often look for guidance from the pros on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the organizers began developing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is planned for the start of 2026 at Oglethorpe University.

“There are thousands of YouTube videos on almost every theme and acquire valuable insights, but the concept was that there’s just no substitute a live, hands-on session together with other dungeon masters, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and your fellow DMs often in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” noted the program's dean.

Course Offerings and Pricing Tiers

Game masters can opt for options ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, based on the amount of contact they desire with the professionals. The starting package includes one of four courses:

  • Core Techniques: Teaches the basics of running D&D.
  • Long-Term Game Planning: Focuses around designing extended campaigns.
  • Worldbuilding: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
  • Industry Advancement: Designed for dungeon masters who want to learn more about the tabletop profession.

Every class includes multiple sessions of training spread over a weekend.

“The courses are designed so that you depart having immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and a lot of usable tools,” Carl noted. “These aren't simple talks and they exceed pre-recorded material. These classes that you can participate in, absorb insights from, and then return to your group the next week and apply in your regular session.”

Expert Instructors

Most classes are instructed by a pair of experts. Universe creation is led by Monte Cook and Keith Baker, both teaching the skill of universe design.

Career building features several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, Clint McElroy, and a pioneering DM. The additional faculty is meant to provide specialized information to students with definite objectives.

“Certain participants want to launch their own real-play series and display their adventures with the world, several plan to produce and write original content,” Carl stated. “Several only seek to ask, What does it take to be a DM at something like an immersive experience? What are the skills that I need? Is this achievable?”

Advanced Options

A fifteen hundred dollar enhanced option provides access to a introductory event, a welcome gift pack, and a half-hour consultation appointment with a teacher. This represents the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run Castle Days during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.

“One could practically host an entire weekend just on one-on-one meetings for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of everybody’s time – I believe the coursework and the hands-on activities is extremely important – but I think it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The $2,500 top package offers an hour of one-on-one time and the chance to lead a session for five players plus a teacher, who will then offer feedback and instruction.

“The goal is for the instructor to evaluate any element is concerned with: I struggle with improvisation or I encounter obstacles in this kind of combat situation. Can I run a scene for you and obtain advice on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Or maybe they want to receive input and information on a specific world that they’ve been creating.”

Coming Developments

Feedback from the debut workshop will help shape upcoming academy workshops. Carl mentioned that likely modifications could include adding more office hours, lengthening the event to three days, or experimenting with alternative workshop formats.

“I hope that we host such events frequently,” Carl stated. “I would love to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in multiple places, and in multiple countries. The response has been extremely positive. We're extremely satisfied with the results so far and I feel it would be wonderful to be able to do this in partnership with large gatherings.”
