Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded gifts might be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Sale

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date remains to be announced, although the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised donated to various charities.

The items are currently kept in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused over a long period.

The full gift list has not yet been made public, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that accumulate during a political career.
